The monthly news roundup from the Educateur of the Indianapolis CdB Chapter. June 2024 Indianapolis Commanderie de Bordeaux Newsletter. This month, more on en primeur releases as more journalists and wine experts continue to share their thoughts on the vintage and chateaux release pricing.
Drinks Business Analysis – Many in the wine business have given their thoughts on what needs to happen with Bordeaux and pricing campaigns to spark interest in the newest releases. While opinions differ, Arabella Mileham writing in The Drinks Business has an interesting analysis on the latest releases, price drops (which are significant) and what it can mean for Bordeaux buyers long term.
More on individual releases — Wine Spectator has been giving good coverage to individual futures releases throughout the month of May. It’s not surprising that prices are stable or, in many cases, down significantly from past years.
2023 Vintage Analysis: An excellent look at the 2023 growing season and how it translated into the newest vintage. This comprehensive article from MW Lisa Perotti-Brown at The Wine Independent covers weather, technical data, and region-by-region notes. This is one of the best reports I’ve seen so far.
Will US Gov Declare Wine Unsafe? While not directly Bordeaux related, it’s certainly relevant to those of us who enjoy wine in the US. After years of recommendations that wine in moderation can be healthy, many consumers are worried that health officials in the US may declare any amount of wine (or alcohol) unsafe. Winesearcher’s W. Blake Grey says in an article “Tom Wark, executive director of the National Association of Wine Retailers, revealed in his blog Monday that a ‘well-placed source’ has seen the wording of the proposed recommendation of no safe level of alcohol for the 2025 dietary guidelines. Wark would not reveal his source but members of Congress believe it, and appear to be concerned.”
Wine and Spirits Magazine Ceases Print Publication – From the San Francisco Chronicle comes the news that Wine and Spirits Magazine will cease print publication. Their editor will stay on as the sole employee and publish some articles online. Apparently the rest of the staff was let go in April.
How Do They Do It? How do wine writers create their notes, tasting 100s of wines, and think about wines and winemakers? The Connected Table Podcast interviews wine writer and editor of WineSearcher, W. Blake Grey.
