Problem Solving in Publishing

I was once asked why I gravitated to publishing. Was it the writing or the literature? For me, the answer was that it was the people — the authors, the editors, the people with ideas pitching or acquiring titles. And as a long-time acquiring editor myself, I developed a nose for what will (or should) sell, a strong idea, a good pitch, and how to tease the threads of what make an author or project special.

How does that translate to problem solving? When authors need an editor — for consulting, writing or editing — they often have a problem. Their agent or publisher has asked for a full proposal. Their publisher has accelerated the deadline. They have a book contract but no idea how to write and deliver a manuscript. They’ve had their manuscript returned as “not quite ready for prime time”. They’re a branded author and they just don’t have time to write the business book or cookbook or whatever. Or, they’re just overwhelmed. These are problems I can help solve.

Writing is problem solving, too. It’s looking at a message, theme or concept and trying to ensure that the words on paper match what the author is trying to communicate to the reader. Sometimes, this requires a fix or two from further development of the idea to creating sidebars and design elements to showcase what’s unique about the content.

Who else has small crises in publishing? Agents sometimes have a celebrity or name client who needs writing collaboration (or the whole book written for them.) Experts have a great idea but need a writer to create the book. Publishers have a big book planned, but no manuscript.

And when it comes to specialized work? An author may need help seeing the marketable leadership lessons in their work. Or a UK or Australian cookbook needs an expert to make it ready for the US market.

All are great reasons to turn to a publishing professional for help. Just need a manuscript assessment? Need a meeting to just see if you have something viable and how to get it to market? Or are you a business with an idea for a book to package for clients or your community? Let’s schedule a video call!

We can work through my proven process to concept your project, synchronize our visions, and make a plan for making your book a reality.
