July Commanderie de Bordeaux Newsletter — Indianapolis

A little thin this month – it’s summer and most writers are just Bordeaux’d out.

En Primeur Price Commentary:  En Primeur may be over, but the discussions surrounding prices is most definitely not. Whether you’re buying Bordeaux for you personal enjoyment or at investment grade levels, you may find the price drop is merely a correction in the overall market price. This analysis looks at LivEx prices and cautions us all to understand what the adjustments really mean.

Final 2023 En Primeur Wrap Up:  If you’re looking for complete information, Jane Anson has her full scores, discussion, and notes. They’re behind the paywall, but if you don’t subscribe already, it’s worth it to get this MW’s perspective and reporting on Bordeaux.  She has a roundup of terrific podcasts, audio masterclasses, and commentary. She even has a full list of cultural events on tap if you’re visiting this summer. Find her at Jane Anson’s Inside Bordeaux.

Weather Woes in Bordeaux: So far this summer, it seems as if every region in France has been hit with hail, excessive rain, and cool temps. From Jancis Robinson:  “On Tuesday 18 June Bordeaux was hit by a major hailstorm that affected more than 1,900 ha (4,695 acres) in the Médoc – which constitutes around 35% of the region’s total planted acreage (5,500 ha).”  The area hit hardest was the portion of Medoc at the mouth of the estuary (an estimated 80% loss). The right bank also saw some significant damage with some winemakers reporting 90-100% crop loss. More from the French publication Vitisphere.

Is wine more political than ever?  In France, it might be. Following weeks of brutal weather – rain, cool temps, then hail, many Bordeaux regions are already facing a tough start to the 2024 vintage.  But Oliver Styles at Winesearcher reports on another potential problem – political views on wine.  One graffiti artist in Paris is making his views known spraypainting “Screw wine – It’s Right Wing” on a popular wine shop.  Ahhh, revolution in Paris.

Looking for a career change?  Author Britt Karlsson has a summary of falling vineyard prices in most of Bordeaux. (Medoc is holding stable – no surprise.)  With rising vineyard prices in the other regions of France, maybe now is the time to buy?  From BKWineMagazine –

Paris Classic Bistro L’Ami Louis Sold!  LMVH gobbles up favorite bistro.  If you’re used to traveling through Paris on your way to or from wine country, you have most likely stopped in to dine at this famous spot. It’s so popular that LMVH’s hospitality division took the chance to snap it up in a recent sale.
